Quick Answer
For Wise vs MoneyGram transfers to India, start with how your recipient wants to receive the money. Wise supports Indian bank accounts and UPI IDs. MoneyGram offers bank deposits and eligible cash pickup, with availability depending on the transfer. Neither is automatically cheaper for every sender.
Our checked pricing snapshot contains Wise estimates for USD→INR and GBP→INR, but no MoneyGram quote. That means we can explain the differences and show Wise examples, but cannot name a price winner between them. A missing quote in our dataset does not mean MoneyGram does not serve that route.
For current alternatives, use our USD to INR comparison or GBP to INR comparison, then confirm the final quote with the provider.
Rate Comparison: Dated Wise Examples
We retrieved these figures from Wise's comparison API on October 25, 2026, at approximately 02:25 UTC. The USD quote was timestamped 02:25:02 UTC and the GBP quote 02:24:58 UTC. These are indicative examples from a provider-operated dataset, rather than independently collected checkout quotes from both services.
| Route | Source amount, including listed fee | Wise rate (INR per source unit) | Wise fee | Estimated recipient amount | MoneyGram equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD → INR | US$1,000 | 94.9948 | US$11.26 | ₹93,925.16 | Not available in this snapshot |
| GBP → INR | £1,000 | 127.0750 | £5.14 | ₹126,421.83 | Not available in this snapshot |
The examples are 1,000 units of the source currency, so the UK row is £1,000, not US$1,000. We checked the arithmetic by subtracting the listed fee before applying the rate: (1,000 − 11.26) × 94.9948 rounds to ₹93,925.16; (1,000 − 5.14) × 127.0750 rounds to ₹126,421.83.
The requests specified source currency, INR and a 1,000-unit send amount. They did not select a sender country or funding method, so your personalized checkout may differ. Fees: Compare the Whole Transfer
| Cost item | Wise | MoneyGram |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer fee | Shown in the quote; the examples above are not a universal fee schedule | Get a quote for your amount, sending country and payout method |
| Exchange rate | Wise says it uses the mid-market rate with an upfront fee | MoneyGram says the applied rate can vary with payment method, receiving method, destination and timing |
| What to compare | Total source-currency debit and final INR received | The same two figures, using matching transfer details |
See Wise's pricing explanation and MoneyGram's exchange-rate explanation. A low advertised fee alone does not establish which transfer gives your recipient more money.
For a fair comparison, enter the same total spending budget in both services. If one quote adds the fee on top while the other deducts it, the displayed send amounts are not equivalent. Check whether a promotion is limited to a first transfer, and whether the quote uses your intended funding method.
You can also compare a fixed recipient target: ask what each service will charge to deliver the same INR amount. This is useful when paying a bill with a known rupee value. Do not subtract a fee a second time from a quote that already shows the final recipient amount.
Delivery Speed and Receiving Options
| Receiving option | What the provider says | What to check before sending |
|---|---|---|
| Wise to an Indian bank account | Usually one working day after Wise receives and converts the money; conversion can take up to three working days | The transfer-specific arrival estimate and how long funding takes |
| MoneyGram cash pickup | Typically available within minutes after a successful send, subject to agent hours and regulatory requirements | Whether cash pickup is offered for this transfer, its ready status and the collection location |
| MoneyGram bank deposit | Available for eligible transfers to India | The bank-deposit estimate shown for your transaction; cash-pickup timing does not apply |
These are provider descriptions, not timings measured by Ledgerton. Sources: Wise's INR transfer guide, MoneyGram's cash-pickup timing FAQ and MoneyGram's India receiving guide.
For eligible MoneyGram cash pickup, the recipient needs the transfer reference and accepted government-issued photo ID with matching recipient details. Check the location's requirements and opening hours before travelling. Cash collection in India is subject to receiving limits and eligibility rules; do not assume every amount can be collected in cash.
Wise's INR guide explicitly includes NRE and NRO accounts, as well as UPI IDs. That supports considering Wise for those destinations; it does not establish that it is always the cheapest or that every payment purpose is supported. Confirm the account details and permitted purpose when setting up the transfer. Our NRE vs NRO tool explains the account distinction.

No data is not a service-availability verdict. Start with your sending country and confirm that the selected provider supports your amount, payment method and recipient destination. For larger transfers, compare actual quotes for the full amount rather than scaling the £1,000 or US$1,000 example; our large transfers tool can help you explore the amounts.
Verdict
Consider Wise when you want to send to a supported Indian bank account or UPI ID and its final quote fits your budget and delivery needs. Consider MoneyGram when eligible cash pickup is needed, or when its bank-deposit quote offers the better combination of recipient amount and arrival time.
For bank deposits, neither service earns an unconditional recommendation from this snapshot. Check both quotes close together, using the same total budget and payout method, and choose based on what your recipient will actually receive and when.
